President Obama Gives Moms A Shout Out In Weekly Address
Fresh off his historic Howard University commencement speech, President Barack Obama dropped his Weekly Address on Sunday, giving a shout out to all of the mothers, including his wife First Lady Michelle Obama and mother-in-law Marian Robinson.
“So this weekend, I’m going to take a little extra time to say thank you to Michelle for the remarkable way she does the most important job: being a mom. And I’m going to give extra thanks to my mother-in-law for the role model she’s always been to Michelle and the countless selfless ways in which she’s helped Michelle and me raise Malia and Sasha. I am incredibly lucky to have women who help me raise, love, and look after our girls,” he said.
POTUS also recognized that motherhood isn’t just about the biological moms, but all the women in our lives who have a hand at raising us.
“…Adoptive moms, and foster moms; single moms, grandmoms and godmothers; aunts and mentors – whomever you think of when you think of Mother’s Day. Or take a moment, like I will, to remember the moms who raised us, whose big hearts sustained us, and whom we miss every day, no matter how old we get,” he said.
During his address, he also stressed the ways government and employers can help support and strengthen families by providing paid maternity and paternity leave, sick leave, accommodations for workers who are pregnant, good health care, affordable child care, flexibility at work, equal pay, and a decent minimum wage, the White House noted.
Happy Mother’s Day everyone!
Little Rock Arkansas Family Receives $1.5 Million After Police Enters Man Home And Fatally Shoot Him
The city of Little Rock, Arkansas has agreed to pay $1.5 million to the family of a Black man who was shot and killed by the local police. The police must also issue an apology to the family.
According to the Associated Press, Eugene Ellison was shot and killed after two off-duty officers working security at the building entered Ellison’s apartment without a warrant. According to court documents, Ellison’s lawyer accused to the police officers of using deadly force after the three got into an argument and began “scuffling.”
Ellison’s family is well-known among the police community: One son is a Little Rock police lieutenant and another is a former police officer.
This is the largest settlement has ever had to pay out, however, the two police officers involved are not facing any criminal charges and are still working on the force, the AP noted.
#ISlay: Beyoncé Helps Boost Actual Lemonade Sales
What she did with Red Lobster, she is now doing with this tangy tonic.
Depending on who you ask, sales for lemonade have gone up since Beyoncé dropped her new album with the same name, the Huffington Post wrote.
Fresh juice industry expert Natalie Sexton told the Huff Po that her Florida-based company Natalie’s Orchid Island Juice Company has seen a double in sales of their natural lemonade, lemonade tea and strawberry lemonade.
“People are drinking lemonade and posting pictures with #Beyoncé. You can’t drink lemonade these days without thinking of her,” she explained.
Another owner, Matt McLean of Uncle Matt’s said his company has seen a 20 percent increase. “I don’t know if that’s due to Beyoncé or the heat. Maybe it’s Beyoncé. We’d send her some free lemonade — it’s organic!” he said.
Speaking of juice, the pop star recently invested money in a startup company specializing in cold pressed watermelon juice company WTRMLN WATR.
